The textured side should face down on the fabric to provide more grip, while the smooth side faces up for the presser foot. However, it is not suitable for stabilizing slippery fabric like spandex or free-standing thread-based projects like lace. It is not fusible and not recommended for direct contact with water and knitting projects. While it dissolves completely with water, it should not be used as a sewing element alone.
