Robert Crumb's Sketchbook Vol. 4 is a beautifully put-together collection of the artist's work between 1982 and 1989. The book showcases Crumb's baroque, self-absorbed, and obsessive mental machinations. This volume is more complicated, varied, and dense, with a higher ratio of not-quite-publication-quality ruminative full-page multipanel comic strips. Additionally, there are a large number of sketches supplemented with blocks of extended text commenting on or somehow related to the drawings. Sometimes the text comments overwhelm the drawings in terms of how much space they take up on the page. However, the book's format size, paper stock, and printing quality perfectly do justice to these sketches.
