- These plates have neutral silica (pH 6-7) instead of the more common acidic silica (pH=5) for thin layer chromatography silica plates,
- which makes the plates compatible with running compounds with an amino group even without the need of adding triethylamine. At the same time non-amino compounds behave the same as on acidic tlc plates.

The binding agent used is Gypsum, which is indicated by the "G" in the name GF254 plates. These plates are embedded with a fluorescent indicator that shows a fluorescence background under 254 nm. Customers have found these plates easy to cut into smaller sizes with a pair of scissors, which makes them ideal for customized applications. They can also be reused at least once by wash-eluting with 100% polar solvent (usually ethyl acetate or acetone). Turning the plate upside down is assuming your first spotting sample mixture is very polar and barely moves even with 100% polar solvent. If your spotting sample is not that polar, you can wash-elute without turning the plate, and you can reuse the plate more than once. Another alternative is to cut them into smaller strips and climbing only to the halfway height which saves plate area and time.
