Disturbingly lovely . . . The Resurrectionist is itself a cabinet of curiosities, stitching history and mythology and sideshow into an altogether different creature. Deliciously macabre and beautifully grotesque.

E B Hudspeth General Science Fiction Books Editorial Review
"The Resurrectionist: The Lost Work of Dr. Spencer Black" is a unique and imaginative book that defies categorization. It tells the story of Dr. Spencer Black, a resurrectionist who becomes obsessed with resurrecting mythological creatures. The book is divided into two parts - a biography of Black and his own magnum opus, "The Codex Extinct Animalia." The biography of Black is told through various mediums such as journal entries, letters, drawings, and excerpts of others' commentary. It takes the reader through the events of Black's life from his birth in 1851 to his disappearance in 1908. As his career progresses, Black becomes increasingly fixated on studying and treating birth defects, believing that they represent the body's expression of earlier forms of life. This obsession leads him to perform ghastly surgeries on his own family. "The Codex Extinct Animalia" is Black's greatest work and features descriptions and anatomical drawings of various mythical species. However, many of the illustrations are missing in the advanced reading copy, which has frustrated some readers. The quality of the present illustrations is also uneven, with some being compelling and others being poorly rendered. The text of the book explores themes of restoring health, the fear of death, and the pursuit of knowledge. While the author creates a believable and compelling voice for Black, the third-person narrative is stiff and awkward at times. There are also some distracting anachronisms, such as the use of the term "genetics" before it was coined. Overall, "The Resurrectionist: The Lost Work of Dr. Spencer Black" is an enjoyable read that takes risks and tries something new. The idea behind the book is intriguing, but the execution falls short in some areas.
